Where you invest matters as much as what you invest in. The same investment can grow to very different amounts depending on the account you use. Tax-advantaged accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs let your money compound without annual tax drag - potentially adding tens of thousands to your final balance.
Employer 401(k) matching is the closest thing to free money. If your employer matches 50% of your contributions up to 6%, that's an instant 50% return before your money is even invested. No investment strategy can compete with that. Always contribute at least enough to get the full match.
Traditional vs Roth is really about when you pay taxes. Traditional accounts give you a tax break now but tax withdrawals later. Roth accounts tax you now but let you withdraw tax-free forever. For most young investors, Roth is the better choice - your tax rate is likely lower now than it will be in retirement.
Match your accounts to your goals. Retirement money belongs in retirement accounts (401(k), IRA). Money you need in the next 5 years belongs in a taxable account or savings. The waterfall strategy - match → IRA → max 401(k) → taxable - gives you the best of all worlds: tax advantages where possible, flexibility where needed.
